Janya Lilly isn’t your average student athlete. The 13-year-old not only excels academically, but she’s also holding her own on the hardwood. What separates Janya from her teammates is simple. She’s the only girl on the boys’ basketball team.
Janya, a 7th-grader at Hampstead Hill Academy in Baltimore, Md., not only plays point-guard on the boys’ team, she’s also the co-captain, while holding down a 3.8 GPA.
“I was watching the boys play, and I went up to the coach and asked if I could try out, because it looked like I could help them out some,” Janya told Yahoo. “They looked like they were a good team, but they needed encouragement.”
“She is one of the best players on the team … and she’s a leader,” coach Jason Wheatley told WBAL-TV. “I think the biggest thing about Janya is she’s fearless, which makes a great athlete.”
As for her future, Janya wants to play in the WNBA and become a lawyer.
